Imitation of Life (1959)
Imitation of Life is a 1959 romantic drama film directed by Douglas Sirk. The movie is an adaptation of Fannie Hurst’s novel of the same name and deals with issues of race, class, marital politics and gender. The movie tells the story of two single mothers, Annie and Lora and their two daughters. Annie is black while her daughter appears white and rejects any African-American heritage. Lora dreams of becoming a famous actress, but her significant other insist she stay at home. Life Is Beautiful (1997)
Life is Beautiful is a 1997 Italian tragicomedy drama film directed by and starring Roberto Benigni. This heartwarming story about a father’s love for his son during their time at a Nazi concentration camps will definitely melt you into a puddle on the floor. The film is loosely based on Benigni’s family history and the actor even won the Academy Award for Best Actor. Hachi: A Dog’s Tale (2009)
Hachi: A Dog’s Tale is a 2009 drama film based on the true story of the loyal Akita Inu, Hachikō. The movie was directed by Lasse Hallström and stars Richard Gere, Joan Allen and Sarah Roemer. Gere plays professor Parker Wilson who finds a stray dog at the train station on a cold night and takes him into his home. He becomes attached to Hachi, who waits for him every day in front of the train station. If you are an animal lover, you’re going to love this heartwarming story of the loyal dog Hachi. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008)
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a 2008 historical drama based on the novel of the same name by Irish writer John Boyne. Directed by Mark Herman the film stars Asa Butterfield, Jack Scanlon, David Thewlis, and Rupert Friend. The Holocaust drama explores the horror of the World War II concentration camp through the eyes of two young boys who will become good friends. P.S. I Love You is a 2007 drama film directed by Richard LaGravenese. The film is based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Cecelia Ahern and stars Hilary Swank, Gerard Butler, Lisa Kudrow and James Marsters. The touching film is about Gerry and Holly, a young couple in love.
